Thk monthly meeting of tho above Council was held oil Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Present: The Mayor, (Mr Clements), Civ. Hally, Priestly, Bond, Webbor, Richardson, 'Ferguson, and Gillett. Tho minute* of the previous meeting were read and c infirmed. Thk Fuit/K Nufsaxck. —Mr Philip Cooper wrote, in reply to ii notice that had heon served upon him, warning liiin to eradicate the furai on, the road near his allotment, stating that the furze had not spread from his land, and that therefore he was not liable. He quoted section 15 of the Public Works Amendment Act, 18S2, in support of his contention.— Or. Hally contended that subsection 'J of section 15 of the Public Works Act required it to be removed, as it was an obstruction.—lt was decided to give Mr Cooper another change before proceeding svith legal .steps, and the legal committee were deputed to draw up a letter explaining the Council's views. ThkEikk.— The Mayor read n telegram from the Acting Mayor of Hamilton, expressing sympathy with the inhabitants under their great calamity. The Mayor said he had replied, thanking the inhabitants of Hamilton. Tub HoiiTicuLTUKAr, Show.—Mr Wells asked, on behalf of tho Horticultural Society, permission to erect a marquee in the street opposite tho the Public Hull, and also asked the Mayor to proclaim Monday, the 18th, a public holiday.—Both requests were granted. Tuanskku Of Lbasks.—Mr G. W. Russell wrote, asking to have tho lease of the proproperty occupied by him, sub-let for a term of one year, from March Ist, to Sir W. Wasteneys.—Granted. WOKKH COMMITTEE Rkl'OKT.—The report stated that the surfaceman had been cutting down the poplars between the bridges and other necessary works during the month. He hud been granted six day's leave of absence to go harvesting. Unpaid Rates.—The collector was instructed to take legal proceedings against all who had not paid their rates by the 31st inst. Accounts.—Tho following accounts were passed for payment:—H. Preece, £4 10s ; J. Bates, £1 Us 2d ; G. W. Russell, £3 IU Sd : W. G. Collins, ,K 2s. The overdraft at date was £093 10s !)d. Notiuk Ob' Motion.—ln accordance with notice, of motion given at the previous meeting, Or. Ferguson proposed that the deposit be returned to tho late gravel contractors, as there appears to be a misunderstanding. Or. Hally thought it would be a bad precedent.— Sever.il councillors spoke for and against the motion, and eventually Cr. Ferguson withdrew his motion in favour of a motion that 30s be returned, proposed by Cr. Priestly and seconded by Cr. Bond, which was carried. This closed the business.
