TE AWAMUTU.
CoscGllT. —The concert in aid of the bazaar funds for rooting St. John's parsonage was held in the hall on Tue.-day oveuiner. Owing to harvest work being in full swing, the settlers working day and the attendance was not very good. Those who were not there missed a treat, for the singing was very good indeed. Special thanks aro due to the Miss:s Archer, who c.imo from Ivihi kihi to play. Mis.i Archer not only came on Tuesday evening, but very kindly came on previous occasions to practice the accompaniments with the performers. Mr Christie was aisokind enough to come from Kihikilii to sing. The andiuno:; was a very appreciative one, and fully enjoyed each item on the programme, the glees being especially good, the correctness with which they wen; sung slnnved careful piv.par.itio:i. Mr Vauso again coiuuls.-d the audience with his clinic songs. The following is the programme : — Pianoforte duot. Miss A.reher; glee. " Chough and Crow,' , th■.; company ; hour, "Nancy L;e,'' Mr Christie; song, "Bitter Sweet," Mrs Andrew ; -sung, '• Auehoied," Mr Riirg ; song, (comic) "Johnny Morgan," Mr Vause; song, "Tim Fog Bell," Mr Burgess; glee, " Dame Dnrden," the company. Interval of ten minutes. Pianoforte solo, Miss Aicher; song, (comic) "The awful little scrub," Mr Christie; song, "The Kerry D.uice," Mrs L'ing; duet, "Excelsior," Mr and Mrs Burgess; sonar, (comic) "The unfortunate Chinamen," Mr Vau.sc; song, "Eileen Ala-nati." Mrs Andrew; song, "The Old L >ck," Mrs Burgess; song, " I fear no foe," Mr Burgess; glee, "The Red Cross Knight," the company, (rod save the Queen. The room was then cleared for dancing which was kept up till twelve when all went home. It is a great pity the hall is not lined and ceiled, as in its present state the effect of the singing is marred by the bad acoustic properties. Harvkst FiwriVAr,. —The annual harvest thanksgiving festival will be held in St. John's Church on Sunday, 3rd March, when the service will be full choral. The lv;v. Mr Boler will preach a sermon suitable to the occasion.
The Lath Fancv Dkmw 8.h.i,.--1 pivdieted :i handsome addition to the hull funds from tha proceeds of this b:ill. My prediction came true (it always does), lor no less a sum than £3 was paid into tlifi c.iff'Jfs of the hall committee, besides a unu valuable property in the shape of blank and unused tickets, and .several Uhimve lanterns. The total receipts were £10,aud the expense* were only a trille oil £7. S i:r:c. people were inconsiderate enough Lo grumble at the uxpjnso, and v.itii tlieir practical ideas said it would h γ-u be'U liiorn to lliii exiling board-! than C!iiivv<e I.interns and blank tickets. Tuny should trv and culti vale a Him',: iusthetic t..i-K\ *l'li.?v d» ri it know that lo.ely de*i:,"is <:■■:: '■• i:\ecufced on the wails aiid ceiling .■• i'i vut.ifui orange, green, blm , , r>l, y■.:!;•■.>■ iui-1 other coloured tickets, which would bi far more effective a:)d striking than the dull colour (,£ the boards, and when the building U lit up with the "sweetly pi-ctty :l Chinese lanterns, the olfect would be gorgeous in the extreme. Besides, the ctFect upon visitors who would not expect such a fairy-like scene of loveliness from'the—well—not beautiful exterior would bo worth all tlio money which ill-natured people (who thought the proceeds would be devoted to the puiohase of timber) say has been squandered. "A thingof b'j.iuty is a joy for over," and when the good people of Te Awamutu feel lowspirited and dull, a visit to the charming interior of their public hall will revive their drooping spiiits, and they will rejoice at the reflection that Te Awamutu possesses some real artists. If Mr Sibl«y and his band had uot, most generously, given their services gratis, there would have been nothing loft to give to the funds. T believe amithur fancy dress ball will be held early in May, when no dr.ubt somo line statuary will bo added to the valuable, property already in stock. When a sufficient supply of ornaments have btwn procure! by this means we shall g.it up a subscription to purchase the necessary timber for ceilng and lining tho hall.
