TE AROHA.
Tow.v Board. —The postponed monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening. Present : Messrs Gallagher (chairman), Mills and Heathcite. The minutes of the last meeting were read anil confirmed. Accounts amounting to £'7 Ins ■Dd were passed for payment, one of these being an advertising account by the proprietor of the To Aroha News, £•> 7s !)d, which had been held over .-ince last meeting. The Clerk (Mr Ahier) mentioned that the late clerk was prepared to certify to the correctness of each item. —Cr. Mills would move that only those items which the present Board had ordered be passed, and for the balance they could do as they liked— sue for it ; by so doing they would then know if Mr Ilott, (wdio was a member of the Board when the debt was contracted) was a partner in the paper, ana if so he could not claim it.—The Chairman thought they had better pass the account, and not stir up any bother of this kind.—Cr. Mills said they could pass the account if they chose, lint, personally, he protested against it.—Tho Chairman moved tho account be passed for payment. —Mr Heathcote seconded. Carried, notwithstanding Cr. Mills' emphatic " No,'" when it was put to the meeting. The overdraft at the bank was stated at £3") 10s 2d, and the amount of uncollected rates owing, £40 odd. Ou the motion of Cr. Mills, seconded by Cr. Heathcoto, it was determined that all persons who had not paid their rates be sued at next Court day.—Cr. Mills said he felt for many of the ratepayers in hi'ving to adopt this course, but as the Board had to show a square account on the 31st March or otherwise be individually liable for the overdraft, there was no help for it.—The Clerk stated that the 6um of £7 10s had been got in for dog collars, and also mentioned that the collector (Mr John Dare) had displayed some amusing but potent ways of compelling owners of the canine tribe to ante up for necklaces. This concluded the business.
Skuious Assault.—An assault of a very painful character was made late on Monday afternoon on a man named J. Hyde, belonging to tho Thames. It appears that some angry words had taken place between Hyde and two ot our prominent townsmen, at the Hot Springs Hotel which resulted in one of the latter prodding Hyde with a short stick in one of his eyes. Dr. Cooper was immediately sent for, and found that a portion of tho stick iiad broken off, and remained in the puncture which lie skilfully removed. It is needless to say the man suffered excruciating pain, as the wound is said to be about two inches in depth, and he now lies at the Hot Springs Hotel in great suffering. Whether the result of an accident or not, Sergeant Emerson took the person in charge who inflicted the wound, and on Tuesday he was brought before the local justices and remanded till Tuesday next, when Mr Northcroft, R.M., will be here. Bail was allowed.
Coaching.—Lately, Mr Owen Gayer has taken up the runninc between Te Aroha and Waiorongomai an J receives a, large share of patronage. This new scrvice is proving a great benefit to men employed at Waiorongomai whose homes are in Te Aroha, inasmuch as they can, for a weekly payment of 2s (id, travel as often as they choose, either in open or close coaches as the weather suits. Thuniikkstohm.—A very heavy thunder and lightning storm accompanied by copious rain, passed over this district on Tuesday afternoon, but no damage has been reported.
