Roliort Br'jwne. a jnJj?m«nfc summons for £120 lis. This us reported ruse out of the caso hoard .•it last Court when Browne wasi mulcted in £100 damages for trespass on Dickey'." farm, which resulted in the death of Libeller, the well-known racehorse. _ Mr Miller appeared for plaintiff and called the defendant Browne as his witness. After a long examination in, which it transpired that defendant had made over all tds property to John Browne, of Cambridge, his brother, the 9 UUI '' made an order that defendant should pay the full amount with all costs on or before March 4th, or in default three month.-' imprisonment with hard labour in Mount Eden Gaol. A number of other cases were heard and disposed of. County Council.—'The ordinary genera, meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held at the Council Chambers, Taenia, on Saturday last. Crs. Nicholls (chairman) Na«h, Quinn, and Rohson being present. A number of tenders were opened for work on the Te Aroha road, and two contracts for draining and repairing that road were let. Mr Charles Cooper, of Te Aroha, was appointed as Health Officer for the district of Uhinemuri. A Hospital and Charitable Aid rate of seven-eights of a penny in the pound was struck. Spoktin'R. -The three race meetings about to come oft at Te Aroha, Paerou, and the Thames, all coining within nine days, should bring some good entries for each club. The Aroha meeting is to be held on Saturday, March !)th ; Paeroa, Saturday, March Pith, and Thames on the following Monday. Some dissatisfaction has been evinced by the Uhinemuri Club only giving £90 in prizes. Aquatic.—There being some money in hand fr«m last year's footsports in connection . with the Social Athletic Club, it is on the cards that a regatta and swimming races will shortly come off on the Ohinemnri liiver. Considering our opportunities for boating and swimming it is strange that we i do not indulge in those healthy and useful recreations oftener. _ MiN'iNii. —In mining matters there is not much new. The Britannia sale at Wa:hi has been concluded, and the purchase money (£2000), has been handed over to the lucky owners. Matters at the Waihi Gold Mining Company's works are still in nubibus, and nobody among the numerous " bosses" appear to know what is next on the programme. A notico appears in the late gazette that the mines, plant and machinery have been m irtgagml to a certain R. Rose, for a sum of £10,000. At Karangahake, the Crown Mines Company arc getting the plant, manager's house, etc. together, and about two months should see both the Lainberton grinding mill and the Cassell Reduction plant in full work. The La Monte furnace is now in course of transit to Waiorongomai, consigned to the caro of Mr Howell.
