Owen, Ciiailes O Neil, John Ivunciman, and Jair.es lioid, were charged under section 10 of tfie lobacco Act, 1870 with having tobacco in their possession upon which duty had not beeo paid. Mr Dyer appeared for the Custom authorities, and was instructed by Mr Hill. The whole of the accused admitted their truilt, but pleaded ignorance of the law, Mr Dyer said the Customs authorities were not anxious to press the charge, for this was llie lirst case of tha sort that had been instituted in tl;o colony ; they believed the offence had been committed in ignorance and only wanted the people to know that they could not. b".y unmanufactured tobacco without paying duty. The magistrate pointed out that the penalty was £.)0, which conld reducei 1 t»y one, fourth. .Ml' Dyer said if the delondauts would petition the Govunior tn remit the line the Custom authorities would not oifur any opposition. The accused were then e u-h tilled £12 10-! and £1 !)s 3d, and were given until next Court day to pay so that they could make appl : cat it'll for the line to be remitted. The whole of th" toliacco bad been grown by Mr James Parker of llautapu. A;;s.u:i.T. — Mary Ann Stewart w:n. ch'irged with assaulting Mary Box in Williams-strout, Cainoiidge, ou January 17th. The case was proved and defendant was lined 5s and 7s costs. There were, several nnimport nit debt c uses disposed of, and the O mrt was adjourned until March Bth.
