Sir John Gorst is a passenger for New Zealand by the Tongariro. The Financial News condemns the New Zealand system of taxation as injurious to the colony. Parliament will reassemble on 21st February. The Maori footballers were defeated by Castleford (Yorkshire) by three goals to three tries. The Pope has presented gifts, valued at ten thousand pounds, to many dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. January 13. Cropper, a prominent bowler of Yorkshire County, was recently injured in a football match, and his death is announced. Colonel Hughes-Hallet, who is suffering from paralysis is recovering. The injuries sustained by the Rev. C. Spurgeon are more serious than at first supposed, and it is reported that his condition is worse.
