TE AROHA.

ATTE.urri-.i.i Suiciu!;.—Our district is gaming a rather unenviable notoriety for sensational events. Only the other week one of our townsmen is reported throughout the colony as having bcisn hammered by a priest in Taranaki, whilst, last weak an inquest was held in oui imincilnto neighbourhood over a man who cam-* by his death through an overdose of strung drink ; a few weeks ag;> we had a suicide by drowning in the river from the railway bridge, and now, our latest sensation 13 a deliberate attempt at the same thing, and from the same place, by a well-known resident, Mr Marry Newton, fruiterer. The biro particulars aro that Newton about 5.30 on Thursday afternoon went to the railway bridge, and whilst a young man in the employ of Mr Woods, butcher, was approaching tho bridge on horseback, he «a.w something fall from it and afterwards heard a splash. He immediately crossed the biidge and informed Mr Everett, boatbnilcJor, of what he had seen and heard, and together they went in a boat. On reaching the spot they foniin Newton standing on a sand-bank in about three feet of water with his head under the water, and after some difficulty they got him into tho boat and landed him safely. The distance jumped was considerably over thirty feet. Newton is a quiet inoffensive man, and doing a very fair business in fruit, cordials and tobacco, but, it is stated, has been over indulging in liquor lately. He was taken charge of by the police' and will, no doubt, be in a better frame of mind when brought before tho authorities to answer for his conduct.
