A NOVEL WAGER.
♦ A RATHEB novel -wager was made at Hongkong lately. Two oaptains of steamers trading to Hongkong—one a Scotchman and the other hailing from the land of the Stars and Stripes—had a hot argument in the billiard-room in one of tlio hotels concerning the prevalence of the Scottish clement umong engineers. The Scot, of course, held out that such was the case, but this was not the opinion of the Yankee skipper. Accordingly, it was arranged that both should visit mx steamers in the harbour and call down the eugine-room of each: " Are you there, Mao r" The Scotchman bet hie friend 25d01. and champagne that five out of the six questions would bring a reply in the affirmative. Accordingly a solemn procession was made, with the following result: —The first two and the nixth engioerooms visited " Yee," the third answered: "'What the is the matter now ?'' the fourth : " Hallo !" and the fifth wanted to know " Why they couldn't leave a man alone for five minutes ?" This result knocked tho American clean out of time, and he paid
the dollars with the remark that " it was worth the coin to know how many blackguard Scotchmen there were engaged in driving fiuo ships to destruction.
