A letter received by General Grenfell from Ostium Digna, gives details of the surrender of Einin Bey and a white traveller to the Mahdi, at Lado, on the 10th of October. Osman Digna encloses a letter which proves to be a copy of a letter given by the Khedive to Stanley, and intended for Einin Bey. December 15. Replying to Lord Randolph Churchill in the House of Commons Mr Goschen said the information to hand concerning tho captives at Khartoum was so uncertain it was impossible at present to suspend military operations in Soudan, or at all events until the news had been confirmed. It is believed that Stanley and Emin Bey have been captured by the Mahdi, and are now prisoners at Khartoum. It is stated that they are manacled, but otherwise are fairly treated. Fur! her information states that the Mahdi has captured a large quantity of ivory and ammunition, and that he has sent the Egyptian prisoners to Khartoum. One of the whites escaped, but nothing is known as to the fate of the others. December 16. The enemy is answering the shelling from the forts, by a hot musketry fire, but so far no harm has been done. The military aeronauts have started from the city to reconnoitre the enemy's position, and ascertain his strength, London", December 14. In his statement regarding the intentions of the British Government, Mr Goschen said that in any event Suakim would have to be relieved without delay. General Grenfeli's discretion was quite unfettered.
