NATIVE TROUBLE AT OKAUIA
For some time past a section of natives near Okauai have been threatening to stop the road works at present being carried out by the Piako County Council, on the Lich-field-To Aroha road. They at first attempted t» stop the survey being carried out by MrT. G-. Sondes, but in this they signally failed. Since then Tawhiao has written, telling them to allow no road making, and a number of Hauhau natives from Whakainarama and other settlements came over and held meetings, with the result that on Saturday last an attempt was made to stop the men working on Ci'osbie's party. One old woman actual. , y lay down in the cutting:, and had to be carried out, and on returning t<i work on Monday, the men foand that their cutting had been filled in again. The County Engineer communicated with Inspector Goodall, of Taurangii, and he lias instructed Sergeant Kinersun to proceed to Olcauin, «u Friday, with Mr Saudes, to inquire into the mutter, The latter is determined to proceed with the work at all hazards, and having plenty of men on the contracts to render assistance, it is probable that the natives will meet with a pretty warm reception if they interfere again.
