The several Agents-General have had an interview with Lord Harris and Baron de Worms, with reference to pensioner settlements in the colonies. Mr John Bright is improving' in health. The Russian Government are preparing to build a bridge across the Danube. The German New Guinea Company are in trouble, and have offered to sell their hinds to the Government. Two hundred Skye crofters have refused to pay their rents. Lord Lonsdale, who is exploring in the Arctic regions, has been met by Esquimaux and trappers walking on towards the North Pole. They say he is a marvel of endurance. Lord Salisbury received an enthusiastic reception in Edinburgh. He said Home Rule would endanger England, and lead to civil war in Ireland. Looking at every consideration, Home Rule was impossible. He denounced in strong terras the maudlin sympathy expressed towards political offenders. He referred to woman suffrage, and said that personally ho was favourable to its being granted.
The French banks have agreed to help to float the balance of the Panama Oanal loan.
The Austrian and Hungarian journals sharply resent the hectoring tone of the German press.
