PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of the above Council was held mi Wednesday, at noon, in the Council office, Cambridge. Present: Crs. W. V. Cliopumll. D. Murphy, .T. Mills, A. Heaney, C. M. Bnmskill, W. Browning, J. Horrell, W. L. C. Williams ami N. I. J-lnnt. The Clerk occupied the chuiv. Tub Chaiiiman*.— On the proposition of Cγ. Brunskill, .seconded by Or. He.any, Cγ. Chepinell was unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year. Ordinary MeetingThe minute* of the previous monthly meeting were rend and confirmed. Patetkiie Loan.—The Colonial Treasurer notilied the Council that thn sum of IU/JO had been loclrkJ to llio credit of the Council on this account. Slauuhtehhouisk Aci'.— The Clerk re ported that Air Conies had paid for a. slaughtering license; he had thereupon written to Sergeant Emerson to stay legal proceedings.—The action of the clerk was endorsed. This Tk Akoha-Lichkikld Road.—Capt. Bailey, on behalf of the Auckland Agricultural Company, wrote as to the powers of the Council to lay off roads and take land fin , such purposes without notifying the owners, and considered such action arbitrary. He also asked for a tracing of the proposed road.—The Clerk had replied that he had not a tracing, and that it was inadvertently omitted to notify him of the Council's intention, and that Mr Sandes was duly authorised to carry it out by a warrant of tiie Governor, given under the Native Lands Act. Native Lands Ratks. — The Commissioner of Native Lands notified the Council that the account for rates on native lauds would be passed on to the Treasury for payment, as soon as the declaration had been signed.—The Clerk hnving written to the Matamata and Waitoa Road Boards asking if they were willing to undertake the expenditure of moneys accruing from native lands within their districts, the former had replied in the affirmative; no reply had been received from the latter. Hospital and Charitable Aid Account. —The Clark having written the Colonial Treasurer asking what subsidies had been stopped on account of the Thames and Coromandel Hospital and Charitable Aid accounts, a statement had been fur-ni.-jicrt, showing £038 !hs 10d as stopped, which still left the Council in debit to the extent of £27!) 3i. The Clerk hid replied p-iinting out that the Battery Cii : s had paid a considerable amount, which, in«toad of leaving the Council in debt, left a credit balance nf £250 Kis, which amount tli-y would be pleased to receive fr,, m t!ie Treasury.—The Chairman s:\id it was very gratifying to find the account was in credit, unto.id of debit. Okouoiki Mot Spkixus.—Mr Rich, of Lichfield, wrote objecting to thecontemplatod new road to the Okoroi i Springs being made, unless it was carried through to the railway station. Hn enclosed a small tracing showing where he should prefer having it carried. —Mr Isaacs waited upon the Cmincil, and presented a petition signed by numerous owners of property in that district, praying the Council to make the road to the springs.—Ci\ Heaney eaid Mr Rich objected to the road being made for the benefit of one individual; but if it was carried through to the railway it would be of public benefit, and the Thames Valley Land Coinuany would not then object to it passing through their land.—Cr. Williams pointed out in addition another short road that could easily bemado, which would a!so be a great public convenience.—On the motion of Cr. Brunskill, seconded by Cr. Murphy, it was resolved that the Chairman and Cr. Williams be a comniitte to meet Messrs Bailey and Rich on the ground, and go fully into the matter, and report to the Council at its next meeting. Members ok the Hospital Board.— Cr. Mills proposed the Chairman and Cr. Brunskill as members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Buard, and complimented them upon the very efficient manner in which they had represented the Council. —Seconded by Cr. Williams and carried unanimously.—Both the Chairman and Cr. Brunskill thanked the Council for their continued confidence, and expressed their determination to conduct the business as economically as possible commensurate with the requirements of the district. Place ok Meeting.— Cr. Brunskill thought Morrinsville was not a convenient place for the Council to meet at, and that if the meetings were held at Cainoridge the expense would be less. He concluded by proposing " that in future the Council hold its meetings at Cambridge."—-Seconded by Cr. Williams.—Cr. Hunt moved an amendment to the effect " that the piace of meetingremainat Morrinsville." —Seconded by Cr. Horrell. On it being put to the meeting the amendment was lost, the voting being: For: The Chairman, Crs. Hunt and Horrell. Against : Crs. Murphy, Williams, Heany, Brunskill, Mills and Browning. The Council will therefore meet ■it Cambridge.—Cr. Murphy proposed, and Cr. Heany seconded, " That the Chairman and Cr. lirmiskill be deputed to choose a snitable room to meet in and make all necessary arrangements.—Carried. The jNkxt Mkbtixu.— It was arranged to hold the next meeting of tiie Council on Thursday, iiUth December, bo that contractors might receivo their cheques before the Christmas holidays commenced.
