THE CAMBRIDGE LOAN.
TO THE £l')ITOK. Sin —I am really sorry that a harmless paragraph—as I thought it should have made Air It-ussell so nore j but, since he accuses ma of dense ignorance I must endeavwiir to show that " the boot is 011 the other l&a£ Mr Kuasell takes my remarks as to the A3,000 loan promoted by Mr Ovvynneth for the purpose of paying off the Karapiro bridge debt, the bank overdraft, leaving a margin to be expended on useful works in the town. This, the only loan scheme that was ever actually put to the vote in CamDridgo, certainly received the support of Mr Clements in the Council.—But why?—l have Mr Clements' authority to state the facts. Mr Uwynneth liked to have his own way. or at least to think he had it j Mr Clements was one of his party, and to use his own words "Uwynneth was determined to have the loan, so I moved the resolution so as to have the thing brought forward, and quartered, and done with for ever.". That Mr Clements worked against tho loan, outside, nobody, unless densely ignorant, could fail to know, ljut the loan scheme that I referred to is the £10,000 loan of which scheme Mr .Russell was the author, and although it never took any choate shape, it was not for want of his untiring advocacy. Orated to from the platform, lectured to in the paper, buttonholed in the streets._ I am certain that there is not a Cambridge resident of any standing that will riot hear ine out in iny assertion that Mr ti. W", linssell was the apostle of a loan that was to do great things for Cambridge —until he t.ioughfc fit to change his views,—l am &c. * 9 J, U» JOfISSOK.
