A SERIAL STORY, By the author of " Aldersyde," entitled TWICE TRIED. Publication Commences on SATURDAY, DECEMBER Ist, And an instalment will appear weekly. We have pleasure in announcing the approaching publication in our columns of a Story by ANNIE S. SWAN, Author of "Aldersyde," "The Gates of Eden, "Across Her Path," "Briar and Pnlin," "Carlowrie," "Sundered Heaits," "A Divided House," &c. &c. THE STORY IS ENTITLED TWICE TRIED, AND IT WILL COMMENCE PUBLICATION ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER Ist. Annie S'. Swan (remarks the British Weekly) who has suddenly sprung into a great position as a popular writer, was born in 1559, and made her first appearance as an Author when seventeen y.ears of age. In the Spring of 1883, appeared her first success—" Aldersyde: A Border Story "—which obtained for the Author the following autograuh letter from the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone :— "10, Downing-street, April 16th, 1883. " Deau Madam,—l have now read the work which you did me the honour to*present to me with a very kind inscription, and I feel obliged to add a line to my formal acknowledgment already sent. I think it beautiful as a work of art, and it must be the fault of a reader if he does not profit by the perusal. "Miss Nesbit' and 'Margit' will. I hope, long hold their places among the truly living sketches of Scottish character.—l am, your very faithful and obedient, W. E. GLADSTONE." Since then, ANN'IK S. Swan has written many stories, all of which have had a wide sale in Great Britain and the Colonies, their pure wholesome tone and distinctly domestic character making them favourites among all classes. The People's Friend, reviewing one of this Author's English Stories, says:—"lt is irs lired with a high purpose and ideal, united to a sweet and simple style, and with the tenderness and love of a warm and sympathetic heart. Her stories have always been found to carry with them a stimulating and gracious influence, and it is a groat plass no to recommend any new fale .-he writes," OUR NEW STC RY TWICE TRIED Is an ingeniously contrived Love Story, told in a easy graphic style, with an air of great life likeness nbont the characters. Tho heroine, who is twice cruelly tried, is particularly well drawn, and will command universal sympathy.
