TE AWAMUTU.
Thh Cavalry VOt.UNTKEUS.-Tho half yearly meeting of this troop took place this week under the command of Captain. Coleman. The muster was only moderate, the Raglan contingent coming over for the inspection which was held on Wednesday. On that day the troop fired for the Government prize when they made the highest aggregate score of any cavalry troop in the colony, winning a prize of £30, which is a very substantial addition to the troop funds. They may well be proud of the achievement. Lieutenant Bruce was elected captain and Sergeant Gresham was elected junior lieutenant vice Lieutenant Storey promoted to the senior lieutenacy. It is a matter for regret that many of the young men in the district do not join and so raise the troop to its former standard of strength. These semi-annual gatherings are not only a means of furnishing healthful and pleasant recreation but they also tend to promote a kindly feeling among men thus brought together. We learn that several young men who have resigned and others «vbo have not hitherto been members have expressed their intention of joining the ranks. We hopek they will do so for it would be a pity to see so fine a troop disband. Should there be an accession to tho ranks there are good grounds for believing that the band which, at one time compared very favourably with any other volunteer band iri tho colony, will again be revived. The bandmaster, Mr Sibley, is second to no one in the country for teaching ability, and, given the men, he can again bring the band to its former state of efficiency. •
