CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The Lytteltou Times stated that it has reason to believe Sir J. Vogel will return to Christchurch in about three months. Murray was committed for trial for breaking into the residence of Hunt at Riccarton, and was sentenced to three months imprisonment for the first escape and nine months for the second, the sentences to be cumulative. He made no defciice, but said the first time he escaped the warder left the cell door open after giving him his tea. The second time he told the gaoler he intended to escape, and he did so just to show what he could do. The Minister of Defence has ordered an enquiry into the alleged cheating at the Scottish Rifles'volleys and independent firing. WANGANUI, Eriday. An old soldier named William Whelan was found at midnight with a bullet wound through him. He says it was caused accidentally but the police think he attempted suicide. DUNEDIN, Friday. One hundred and nineteen applications have been received in Dunedin this week for Crown Land selections in the various districts. A heavy fall of snow occurred this morning. NAPIER, Friday. The Mechanics Institute and a butcher's shop, at Havelock, near Hastings, have been totally destroyed by fire. A cart containing two men and a boy attempted to pass in front of a passing train and was knocked to pieces, but the occupants were thrown clear ot the train. Their injuries are not very severe. NELSON, Friday. It is bitterly col.l weather. The snow is lower on the hills than it has been all the winter. WELLINGTpN, Friday. Owing to the advance in the wheat market, flour has advanced £1 a ton and oatmeal is now quoted at £15.
