The attendance was the largest ever seen at Flemington, and it is estimated that fully 150,000 people were present. Ensign, the winner of the Derby, broke his leg during the Cup race, and both Spade Guinea and Dick Svviveller broke down. Outside of New South Wales the win of Mentor in the Melbourne Cup was very popular. His victory is a bad one for the bookmakers, as the horse had beeji_backed for a heap of money. ,/ \ The injuries sustained by Spade Guinea and Ensign, while ninaing in'the Cup race, proved so serious tliSt'bytb horses had to be destroyed. / > November 7. Fifty-seven thousand people went by train to JTleinington yesterday to see the Cup rim. Mr Donald Wallace, the owner of Mentor, wins about £14,000 by his horse's victory.
