A LAHOUHKIi named Andrew McFarlane, with Ins wife and two children and three others, whilst crossing the river Matnura with a. dray containing his furniture, wan capsized, and all were, drowned but one boy, who floated ashore r>n a box. LATER. IxvEitOAi«;ii,r,, Friday. None of the bodies of the persons drowned in the Mataura River have been recovered. Later news shows that McKarlanc had made a gallant elFort to save his wife and her sister. He was swimming strongly, and was close to the shore, when he saw them struggling in the water, and turned back to help them. They sank before he reached them, however, and he also soon after disappeared. This heartrending scene was witnessed by the only survivor, a lad of eighteen, who seized hold of a box and part of a bedstead, and kept himself afloat till he landed some distance down the river.
