Utteiuxu a V.\i.unr.Kss Chkqub,—A re spectably dressed elderly man named Lawrence was charged on Tuesday with the above offence, alleged to have been committed at Te Aroha. Constable Jones arrested the accused on the arrival of the afternoon train by which became from that place. He was charged with having issued a valueless cheque to a man named Berger, a watchmaker. On the application of the police he was remanded to Te Aroha, whither he was taken by Constable Jones on Tuesday morning. LEcrrußK by Mb Aldertox.—Mγ Alderton, Government Life Insurance Agent, lectured in the hall on Monday evening (Mr Teasdale in the chair) on the benefits of life insurance. At tho close of a short address on this subject Mr Alderton save a lecture on fruit culture which was listened to with great attention. As it has been already reported in these columns it is unnecessary to recapitulate. A number of questions were asked, and at the close the usual votes of thanks were accorded. Though the weather was threatening there was a very large attendance, many coining from long distances to hear a lecture on a subject so important.
