EMPEROR AND POPE.
SPEECH BY KING HUMBERT (BY ELECTRIC TELEOU-VPH.—COPYRKSHT.) Ro.M 1% October 13. Tub Emperor William of Germany I was accorded a cordial interview with the Pope, which lasted half-an-hour. His .\lajesty afterwards paid a visit to the Vatican galleries and St. Peter's Cathedral. A banquet subsequently took place in the Palace of the Quirinal. King Humbert in his speech said that the Triple Alliance between Germany, Austria and Italy had conduced to the pnace of Europe and the welfare of the people, lie proposed the toast of the German Army, which he said was the bulwark of that nation's glory. The .Emperor William strongly echoed the allusions of King Humbert to the alliance between Germany and Italy. Ho said that Germany had won her unity by the sword. IT.e said there was an analogy in the history of the two nations which implied a perpetual agreement between them. He proposed the toast of the valiant Italian army, and concluded by expressing his thanks for the splendid reception he had received. Pie decorated Signor Crispi with the Order of the Black Eagle, remarking that no one had ever deserved it more. The Emperor Williani and King Humbert held a review of the Italian army, consisting of 33,000 men. Great enthusiasm was shown on the occassion by the people.
