PURE JERSEY HERD
Mr Rk'HAUD Rkvmliis, of I'ukekura, passed through Hamilton «n Saturday last with a truck load of pure Jersey cattle, purchased in Wanganui, and intended as the nucleus of a stud herd of .Jerseys he proposes to establish in Waikato. When .Vlr Reynolds was in Melbourne a few weeks ago, taking a shipment of this breed for the market there, he realised the desirability of brincing the qualifications of this breed more directly before the attention of those interested in the dairy industry, and in view of tho importance of this branch of farm wuik he has decided to devote his attention to the establishment of a herd of P'jre Jersey cattle in Waikato. With this intention he lately proceeded to Wangauui, and purchased from the well-known herd of Mr Kiiderby and Miss Impuv, eight cows and heifers, tho best probably that could be procured in the colony; also a bull, cow and heifer from Mr A. Buckland, of A uckland. This bull will be located at Mr H. Reynold's dairy farm at Newstead. It is Mr Reynold's intention also to raise half-bred cows for the local demand, as the value of a large intermixture of the Jersey breed has always been realised by the Taranaki dairymen, which, no doubt, accounts for the just estimation in which the butter from this province is held, and for the good name that article has won in the sister colonies. Mr Reynolds intends using the Jersey bull belonging to Mr Day, of Tamahere, for his stud cows. This animal was bred by Mr J. M. Clark from very high-class stock, and we understand from Mr Reynolds that, with the exception of the imported bull lately referred to in these columns, amongst the cattle taken by him to Melbourne, this bull of Mr Day's is the best of any he has seen in any of the herds visited either in Victoria or New Zealand. As the .Jersey breed has been proved both in England and America as far before all others for yielding a high percentage of butter, this district will bo much indebted in the future to tho enterprise displayed by Mr Reynolds, and we sincerely trust he way reap a rich reward for his trouble and outlay. We hope shortly to be able to give a more detailed account of this lot of high class cattle.
