Durino the past ten days four applications for mineral leases (coal) have been made, covering nearly seven thousand acres, upon which £070 has been paid to the Land Office. C tIRISTC HURC H, Friday. The railway station at Opawa, on the Lyttleton line, three miles from Christchurch, was burnt down at 5 o'clock this morning. The cause of the fire is not known. Mr MeCallum, stationmaster. who lives near, was awakened when the station was a mass of flames. Nothing was saved. In Chambers to-day, Mr Justice Ward quashed the conviction of O'Connor, convicted of illicit distillation at Timaru, on the ground that his term of imprisonment was longer than proscribed by the section of the Act under which be was convicted. DUNEDIN. Friday. At a meetinsr of tha Chamber of Commerce, a communication was received from the Government, stating that they did not see their way to reduce the charges made by the Assignee in bankruptcy, as the Department barely paid expenses, It was resolved the committee make enquiry during the coining quarter, as the impression was there was a handsome surplus. Mr Denniston, lat> president, in referring to the Melbourne Exhibition said that, as an illustration of the excellence of tlie grain exhibits, a leading American manufacturer was so struck with the appearance of some wheat grown near Oamaru that he had written to the speaker's firm for a few bags for introduction into America, with the hope that they might be able to produce crops as good as those exhibited. A vote of thanks was passed to the Hon. R. Campbell for his action in regard to the Dock Trust Loan.
