CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN BOARD
The Cambridge Domain Board met in the borough offices on Saturday, at 12.15. a.m. Present : Messrs T. Wells (chairman), J. Fisher.'R. Kirkwood, and E. Hewitt. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the action taken by members at an informal meeting held on July 11th was endorsed. Sis-entry.—A warrant having been received from the Governor, granting the board authority to re-enter and take possession of lot 53, Cambridge West, it was resolved that the action of the chairman in letting it to Mr White for one year, at 50s per annum, be endorsed. Gifts ok Treks.—On tho motion of Mr R. Kirkwood, votes of thanks were passed to tho Rev. E. Boler, of Te Awamntu, and R. Hobbs, Esq., M.H.R., for trees presented to tho board ; the former having given 100 seedling hallies, and the latter 20 pepper troes. The Fern in the Lake Reserve.—Tho Chairman said it bad now been four years since the fern on the banks of the lake reserve had been cut, and it was becoming very dangerous, for if a lighted match was accidentally thrown amongst it, the fire would spread so rapidly that it _ would be utterly impossible to extinguish it, and all the trees would most probably be destroyed. He was well aware that it was their duty to retrench as much as possible, and indeed, this work—if done—would be a species of retrenchment, for if the trees were destroyed, it would take a considerable amount of money to replace them, and if such an accident did happen, he felt sure tlie public would blame them mostseverelv. The bank overdraft was now down to £108 and he thought they might safely undertake tho work. The members being unanimously of opinion that the work ought to be done, a discission ensued as to the time at which it should be undertaken. The. {Chairman said the present was the proper tnno, as the fern had not only to be cut, but also burned, and it would bo a difficult matter to do the latter withnut great risk of the whole catching at once. —Messrs Kirkwood and Hewitt thought if it was left until January it would include the present year's growth, and also bloed tho fern and help to kill it; but on the Chairman pointing out that it would bo necessary to have a penalty for each tres injured, and that, therefore, if cut then, they would doubtless have to pay more in consequence of the extra risk, they did not press the matter.—lt was eventually resolved on the motion of Mr Kirkwood, seconded by Mr Fisher, to call for tenders for clearing and burning the fern on the banks of tho To Koutu Lake, _the work to bo completed by December 15th, and 2s (id for each tree damaged to bo stopped out of contract money, tenders to be opened on the 20th inst. Bank Overdraft.—The overdraft at the bank now stands at £108 (is 2d, and there is still £41 0s 3d due for rents up to August 10th. During the past year the overdraft has been reduced by £118 15s Sd, as at this time last year it was £227 Is lOd. This must be considered very satisfactory, for, when the overdraft is paid off, the Board will be absolutely free from debt, there being no other liabilities whatever. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—T. Wells, 28s ; W. B. Souter, 4s !)d ; J. P. Thompson, £4 3s. This concluded the business.
