AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.

Messrs B. Goldsborough and Co.'s report, dated Melbourne Sept. 28th states Wheat may now be quoted at 3a Gd per bushel for all good shipping quality. Some holders are tanking for higher prices, but shippers in the present condition of the freight market are unable to operate at this figure, and in consequence the business transacted is entirely confined to local requirements. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report, Brisbane, 22nd September :—Business during the present month has, so far, been considerably interrupted by political matters —chiefly in connection with the New Tariff proposals now under discussion. Wo append some of the duties, relating more particularly to produce, embodied in tho Premiers Budget but, pending ratification of same by Parliament, they must not be taken as definite in the meantime —though the increased rates are at presetit being collected by the Customs. We do not. however, anticipate .any important abatements being made—in view of tho Treasury deficit. A stt\>ng feeling exists in favour of levying a duty on flour and admitting wheat free; this proposal, doubtless, would lead to a large development in the milliner industry, but would, of course, be unpopular with a section, who decWfio to admit that this colony is unsuited to the cultivation of wheat. Butter (proposed duty, 3d per lb): Has weakened considerably during the lust few days, and it would be well for .New Zealand shippers to be prepared for lower prices on their consignments than those recently quoted. The decline in value is principally owing to the new spring butter being now available in Victoria and South Australia. Prime New Zealand potted i* rather plow of sale at Is 7d to lsßd, and slightly "off" samples are worth Is 3d to Is ad with a rapidly easing market. —Cheese (proposed duty 3d per lb): Owing to tho reported scarcity of stocks in New Zealand and Victoria the market has shown a steady advance, and supplies on the spot are quite inadequate to the demand. Prime Southland Factory (hircro size) is worth lOd to lid and loaf, 10V1 to lled. We have lately placed some considerable lines to arrive, and we are advised that the new season's cheese will not be available for shipment to this colony from the Otago district before the end of the year,—Hams (proposed duty 3d per lb) • Aro rather slow of sale, owing 'if heavy arrivals from JMig land, and prices are not well maintained. English cures quoted at about Is 2jd, and New Zealand at Is to Is Id.
