A HEROIC ACT.
An act of dovotion was performed by an artilleryman at Marseilles, Franco, on June 1 Gtli, ou the ocox-sion o? a. military tournament. The Horse Artillery were taking part in th'-se rcartial exercises, when in the excitement of the moment the (runners who were loading one of the cannons, forgot, t.he handle, of a. rammer which they had just, been using', and prepared to fire. One of them named Mieelis, bethought, himself of tho rammer ere the, charge had ignited, and, conscious of the havoc it would cause among tho crowd, bravely rushed forward to extract it. At that moment the gun went off, and the poor fellow, receiving the rummer full in tho breast, sunk to the ground mortally wounded. At first it was thought he was dead outright, bat ho was stiil breathing. He was conveyed to tho hospital, where he expired a few hows afterwards in intense agony. M. Floquet, at oncc directed that the tournament should bo brought to ail end, and soon he and his colleagues were at the bedside of the dyinir artilh-rvmnn.
