RESIDENT MAGISTRATES' COURT, CAMBRIDGE.

Yksterday—(Before Capt. Jackson, 11. M.) CIVIL. A i'K\v debt cases were heard and disposed of. CRIMINAL, Sainuel Bond and Arthur McCabe were charged with assaulting and beating Matilda AlcKerney and Florence Stuart respectively in the domain grounds on Tuesday, the 2nd inst., about 8.30 p.m. Constable Brennan stated that on the above evening the two girls went for a walk in the domain, and intended going to listen to the singing at the Baptist Tabernacle, there being a soiree held there that evening ; but the accused, who were also accompanied by two others, frightened them to such an extent that they could not go. The evidence taken was very voluminous, much of it being—to our thinking— very irrevalent. It however proved that the larrikins annoyed the girls by sitting on the same seat with them and when they attempted to up pulling them back, pinching their arms and otherwise annoying them. They were con-icted and fiued £2 and 17s costs each, or 14 days hard labour. They were allowed a fortnight to pay the money, Samuel Bond, Arthur AlcCabe, .Tames Bmd and Patrick AlcGarry were charged wit'i using insulting language in a public place. The evidence was similar to that given ill tho former case. The whole of the accused were convicted but were discharged with a caution. David Pearson was charged with obtaining board and lodging, to the value of £2 15s from Arthur Bach, proprietor of the Criterion Hotel, by false representation. Arthur Bach deposed that accused had nipresented he had £12 owing him by Air Smithyman, of Te Aroha. He had wired to Air Smithyman, who denied owing the amount. He applied for an adjournment to produce evidence. Remanded for eight days, accused being bound over to appear in sureties of £60. Thin was all the business,
