Humphrey during his visit to the South took occasion to explain what would be expected of officers in future. In conscquence of reduction, the permanent militia and naval artillery will have to work in conjunction with the harbour defences at the principal ports, and the contemplated changes are chiefly in this direction. Mr Booth, son of the head of the Salvation Army, arrived in Wellington yesterday, and large and crowded services were held in his honour, at which he mentioned that he intended to urge his father to pay a visit to the colony. He leaves for the South to-day. . The Mariposa, with the English mails of September Sth, left 'Erisco for Auckland on the 24th, two days late. The Zealandia, with the colonial mails of September 10th, arrived at 'Erisco on the 20*h, one day early.
