FALSE PRETENCES.

[BY TKLKC.ItAL'U—OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, Monday. A well-known Auckland tradesman, named Hubert Stevenson, who has carried on business as grocer and butcher in Newtoil Road for many years, appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged with a false representation, as fellows: — "That the said Robert Stevenson did within four months of the presentation of a petition in bankruptcy on the X'Jth day of July. ISSB, at, Remuera, obtain on credit two steers of the value of £14 15s from A. Buckland and Son, cattle salesmen, by certain false representations and fraud—namely, by giving to the said Alfred Buckland and Soil a certain valueless cheque, or order of payment of money, signed by him upon the National Hank of New Zealand (Newton branch) for the sum of £50 fis, in pretended payment of a certain account then due, with intent to defraud the said A. Buckland and Son, and whereby the said A. Buckland and Son were induced to sell and deliver to him the said two steers on credit, and he had not paid for the same. After hearing the evidence, the Bench considered a prima facie case had been made out, and committed the accused for trial.
