DEPARTMENTAL CHANGES.

WELLINGTON, Monday, The Premier is expected back to-morrow night, and it is expected the Cabinet will then consider the abolition of the Public Works Department. The railways will be placed under the Working Railways Department, harbours under the Marine, and roads and the "unemployed" under the Surveys Department. The amalgamation will involve the dismissal of a number of officers, and it is estimated that the annual saving will approach £10,000. The Public Works Department is at present not spending more than £40,000 per month, and the Minister is of the opinion that the funds in hand will carry them on for three years or mi-.re than was calculated. The Minister of Lands has been engaged all day in conference with sheep inspectors, whose duties under the new regime begin this month. The whole question of inspection was discussed in ill its bearings, and the lii-tiicts have been assigned as follows: — Wellington and T.ir.ina!,i, Mr Clifton; Canterbury, Mr l'Hs'.er; Otago, Mr Douglas; .Mu Ihorongh, Mr -Richardson ; 11 awakes I'.i.v, .Mr P.tsjey ; Auckland, Mr I'. iyley, lateViapei intending Inspector.
