HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday in tho Council Chambers Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Isaac Coate.s), and Crs. Knox, Sandos, Salmon, Wiwd, Bell, von Stunner, Frear and Jones. Suhsidy. —A letter was read from the Properly-tax Commissioner, stating that £25 10s lid. balance of subsidy, had been placed to the credit of the CouncilHospital Coxtkiui:tios.— The Secretary of the Hospital Board wrote, requesting the payment of JiGli 7s 4d, balance of the contribution due to the Board.—lt was resolved to pay £25 on account.

Ul'stkr-stukkt.—Mr W. Murliss wrote, cilling attention to the state of Ulsterstreet leading towards thu cemetery, and asking that the necessary repairs be done. — The matter was referred to the Foreman of Works, to report at next meeting.

Pou.viiKKEi'KK. —The pound keeper reported that owing to the piddooks being closed very little money had been collected. Tho following is all that was collected :—

Pound foes, 12s; Hamilton East commonage, 2.5.

Flax.— Messrs Calderwoml and Mclntyre applied for permission to cut flax on the Borough property neartheseho'.l bridge. The Clerk Was instructed to reply that tho Council had no power to grant tho request. FoitiiMAN ok Wouics.—The Foreman of Works reported that a number of necessary repairs had been effected in different parts of the Borough. With reference to Mr McSweeney's application ho recommended that a footpath be made up to Mr MeSweeney's property. The report was received and the matter of McSweeney's application was referred to Chairman of Works Committee with power to act.

Baths.—lt was resolved to call for tenders from experienced swimmers to act as caretaker for the baths, under tlio same regulations as last year, tenders to be in by tlio 2Dth instant. Cr. Jones here retired. Lights.—The. Clerk was instructed to write to H. Kelly, tlio contractor, asking why the lamps in Victoria-street were not alight at 12 midnight, on Saturday, September 1. Lisask.—His Worship the Mayor and Crs, Knox and Frear were appointed a committee to submit a report at an adjourned meeting of the Council, to be held on the 25th iust., with reference to leasing that part of endowment at the corner of Bridge-street, with cottage thereon. Bhadi.kv's Paddock.—lt was resolved that Bradley'a paddock be opened for grazing purposes the charge to be horses 2s (id, cattle Is lid per week.

Lamps.—ln accordance with notice given, Cr. Bell moved that all the lamps in tho B'irougl), with the exception of 3 on the bridge,' 2 in the neighbourhood of tlio bridge, and 1 at the briuk culvert at Hoodstreet be done away with.—Seconded by Cr. Wood.—Cr. von Stunner moved as an amendment, that all the present lamps be retained, and that extra lamps be erected at tho cornel , of the Cambridge road, and Gal-loway-street, and corner of Cook-street and Galloway-street. — Seconded by Cr. Kiv.w—The amendment was put and lost.—Cr. Knox then moved, as a further amendment, that the centre lamp on the bridge and the one at tho Hamilton West Station gate he done away with, the other lamps being retained. —Sec.nided by Cr. von Stunner.—The amendment was put and carried, the voting being, for the amendment, Crs. von Sturmer, Knox, Sandes, Salmon, and Frear. Against it, the Mayor, and Crs. Bell and Wnod.-The original motion was then put and lost, the voting boinir vice versa. Trkks. —The Clerk was instructed to write to Messrs Bullock-Webster and Dellicar with reference to trees overhanging the footpath.

Payments.—The following accounts wore passed for payment:— Tiik Waikato Timbs, £2 18s (id ; Thames Valley Land Company, £3 4s (Id ; Chappell, f 7 10s ; Kelly, £3 4s 3d ; Waite, £3 5s ; Dey, fis ; Keid, 4s 8d ; Lees, 7s ; Murray, £'J 18s (id ; Proctor, £5 Ks. This wns all tho business, and the Council adjourned to Tuesday, the 25th instant, at 7.30 p.m.
