THE MINERS' STRIKE.
[By Elhctkic Tixkgrapii.— Coi'yrk;fit| •Sydney, September 4. Tiiiiity vessels have discharged their crews in consequence of tho Newcastle strike.
One of the principal Soutliorn coal mines was discovered to be on fire to-day, and it is suspected that some of tho men on strike are concerned in the affair. Tho lire was fortunately extinguished before much damage was done.
Owing to the exertions of the Minister of Lands, a conference between tlic coal masters and miners on tho matters in dispute has been arrangod.
The minors in the Southorn district have domandod from tho masters an increase of rates paid for hewing coal, and it is feared that unless the request is conceded the men will go out on strike. Muluouhnje, September 4. There are now fully a thousand wliarf hands out of emplojmiont, owing to the Newcastle strike.
