TE AROHA.

Annum, Soiree. — The (second annual soireß in connection with St. Marks Church was held in the hall on Wednesday last, and was well patronised. The tables, which were loaded with good things, were laid out with great taste, and were presided over by Mesdames Dobson, Winstone, Heathcote, Downes, Marshall, Emerson and Marsdon. After the wants of all had been attended to, the second part was introduced, which consisted of several musical selections, both vocal and instrumental, speeches by the Rev. Marshall, Rev. Lawry and others, a reading by Mr Winstone, and a recitation, "The Maiden Martyr," by Miss Rorao. This item was a real treat, and is fully deserving of special mention. • Reward for Bravery. —Mr F. C. Smithyman, proprietor of the Aroha Gazette, was called upon by the chairman to receive a certificate of merit from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia for his bravery in rescuing a boy named George Cornes from drowning. Mr Smithyman briefly returned thanks. Balance-shkkt. —The Balance-Sheet was read, and showed a decroa«e of indebtedness during the year, of £D 03s Id. The present liability being £90 on church build ing fund, and £1710s on organ fund, the whole of which it was reasonable to hope would soon be cleared off. Town Board.—A special meeting of the above Board was held in the office on Friday. Present: Crs. Dobaon (chairman), Gavin, Hotchins, Frazer, and Ilott. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Gavin, that the balance-sheet of the beard, up to the 31st March, 1888, ae presented, be adopted and published. Carried. On the motion of Cr Gavin, an account to Owen McCabe, omitted at last meeting, was passed for payment. Cr. Frazer moved and Cr. Gavin seconded, that the Clerk be instructed to prepare a ratepayers roll to be the Electoral Roll for this Town District, at the forthcoming election. Library.—The Library Committee met last Thursday evening, and passed the following resolutions:—l. " That the Library be removed from the present building to premises in Rolleeton-street." 2. "That 1 on and after the Ist September a charge of 5.i per annum, payable half-yearly in advance, be made upon all persons using the reading-room, and visitors Iβ per month." Mr W. Deverell was elected a member of the committee. Nkw Buildings.—Plans and specifications have been prepared and tenders called by Mr F. Pavitt, architect, for the erection of a Urge shop in WhitakerBtreet, the property of Mr A. W. Edwards. Land Tknurr. — The committee appointed by the Town Board to interview Mr Lipsey re this matter waited upon that gentleman, and we learn that a written reply will be read at the next general meeting of the Board, on the 13th September, slating his willingness to grant leases in perpetuity at present rentals. This will certainly give a feeling of security, and a great deal of satisfaction to the residents of this place. Thb Borough Question.—The question of possible liability in connection with the tramway having been submitted to Mr Button, solicitor, of Auckland, for his opinion, » reply has been received stating that there ie no indebtedness existing upon the tramway, and consequently none could be charged. That only a legitimate share of existing County liabilities would have to be assumed by the Borough, and that the tramway would not necessarily become borough property ; but, if awarded to the Borough, it would be valued at present actual value, which would easily be computed, as it is now leased for ten year?, at £100 a year. Mining News.—Mr J. A. Pond, of Auckland, lias evinced his faith in the ultimate success of tho Tui district, by applying for a Licensed Holding of 25 acres to bo known as the Lord Wolesley. Mr C. A. Cornes has despatched a parcel of ore from the Champion Mine, Tni, to the Chamber of Commerce Auckland, to bo forwarded to the Melbourne Exhibition.
