At a public meeting to-day resolutions were passed protesting against the renewal of the San Francisco mail contract iF Chinese were employed on the steamers. The drought is causing sad havoc in the western districts of New South Wales. Many sheep are dying, and the outlook is very dismal. It is proposed to offor special prayers for rain throughout the colony on 3.lst inst. The French Vice-Consul here, the Marquis le Roistang, is dead. Brisbane, August 27. The football match on Saturday, English team against the Queensland representatives, was won by the former by seven points to nil.
