WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the above Council was held at 2 p.m. yesterday in tho Council Chambers, Hamilton East. Present: Crs. Primrose (chairman), Seddon, Barugh, Steele, Johnson, Forrest and Smith, Mr T. G. Sandes, County Engineer, was also in attendance. Engineer's Retort. — The Engineer's report was read and adopted. Railway Reform. — Tho Chairman moved that this council, as representatives of the people of Waikato, desires to thank Mr Samuel Vaile, of Auckland, and to express their admiration of his continuous agitation of the question of the reform of our railway management, as they are completely in accord with his views on that question, which they consider to be one of vital importance to the colony, and it was with surprise and astonishment that this council saw the answer given by the Minister for Public Works in in his place in the House of Representatives to the offer made by Mr Vaile to leese the Auckland railways, and offering to give the Government ample security against any loss that might arise from the arrangement, as the committee appointed by the Government to enquire into Mr Vaile's system of railway management advised that a trial of it should be given, provided that the Government were secured against any loss that might be incurred by the trial of the system, seconded by Cr. Barugh and carried. The Clerk was instructed to send copies of this resolution to MrS. Vaile, and also to the Minister of Public Works.

Subsidy.— A letter was received from Mr J. B. Why to acknowledging the receipt of the petition from Council re monies illegally deducted from subsidies due to the Council, and he promised to do his utmost in bringing the matter before the House. Funds. —Hie Clerk reported that the County funds were in credit £131 9s fid, while the state of the riding accounts is as follows In credit. Rangiriri, £313 4s Od ; Cambridge, £93 Ss. in debit : Tamahere, £118s <Hd ; Kirikiriroa, £31 3s ljd. Crossing. —Messrs Friar and Davis wrote, complaining that the ganger at Huntly had refused to allow persons to cross the lino into the Tanpiri mino, and asked the Council to take action in the matter. The road being a public one, the Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Cooiu, demanding that a level crossing be put at this place. Logs.—The Clerk was instructed to inform Mr Collins, Mine Manager, Huntly, that the drawing of logs on the public road is illegal; and also to ask him to remove the broken rail on the tramway where the latter crosses the road. Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—Lees, £1 12s Od ; Lindsay, £1. 0s ; Murray and Spencer, £1 10s Gd : Chainptaloup and Cooper, lis 9i ; Knox. 10s Sd ; Waipa county, £1 10s Od ; Metcalfe, 9s 3d ; Court expenses, £10 18s lid ;J. J. Johnston, £1 10s; Smith, 10s; Forrest. 10s; Koss, £2; Milne, £2 2s ; Dixon, £15 10s ; Vincent, 10s 8d ; Knox, £1 lis 3d ; Sutherland and Bridge, £5 ; Downey and Cowley, £G ISs ; The Waikato Times, £2 4s Gd. This was all tho business.
