♦ Monday. — (Before Captain Jackson, R.M., and Mr Mandeno, J.P.) (Continuation of Monday's sitting.) Sly Grog Skiving : Asothkk Chaiuje.— Information was laid this morning by Constable Berrimnn against Charles Innis for being accessory to the. illicit salo ot liquor by Samuel KdnnarJ. Defendant, who was not ruj»resonted by counsel, pleaded not guilty. It way decided to hear, mi behalf of the prosecution, the evidence of Samuel Kennard, after which the Court would decide whether an adjournment would he triven. Samuel Kennard deposed to being employed iiy defendant for about three weeks to sell hop beer, colonial beer, lemonade, &c., but no spirits of any kind were sold by him while there. Witness derived no personal gain from the transaction. He was simply paid wages (10s per week) and commission on the side of the hop beer. The beer was ttwld at Is lid per bottle. Sometimes he sold as much as twenty bottles a day, and sometimes more. Crossexamined by defendant: You did not toll m« when I went there that the colonial beer was to be at my own risk if I sold it. That it was there for your own private use and to Ejive to some friends You said the last man there got 4s GJ per dozen for selling the beer, n.nd made AN") or a week, and that you would not pay so much commission again. You did not allow me 4s (3d a dozen for selling. I paid on your account several sums of money to carpenters for wages, l'aid you about .I*3 and sums to others, amounting altogether to about £10. You did not ask at any time for a statement of accounts. Did not voluntarily offer to give evidence in this case to get you into trouble. John Cavanagb deposed tn buying two bottles of colonial beer from Kennard on 20th July, one of which is now produced. It contained colonial beer. The bottle produced is the one and the liquor is the same. The bottle was sealed in witness' presence by Constable Berriman at Te Kuiti. Be fore sealing it both Constables sampled it and found it to be beer. It was an intoxicating liquor. The case was then adjourned till next court day. Several debt cases were disposed of.
