POLITICAL NOTES.
(by telegraph—own* COKHKSPONDISNT). Wellington, Friday. WELLINGTON-MANAWATU RAILAVAY. The presentation of the report on this company's petition to-day caused a protracted dobate, tho report being adverse to the prayer of tho petitioners. THE NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE COLONY. The desirableness of the substitution in place of some of the subjects now taught in tho State Schools of a reasonable amount of instruction oil tho natural resources and history of New Zealand was brought under the notice of the Minister fjr Education this afternoon by the member for St. Albans. In putting the question Mr Reeves stated that it had been brought to his notice by Mr Goulding and ho thought the subject was well worthy the Minister's attention. M r Fishor in reply spoko very favourably of the proposal and said ha would bring it under the notice of the Education Boards of the colony. PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT. The Premier has requested the House to meet to-morrow morning expressly for the purpose of enabling Mr Mitchelson to deliver his Public Works Statement. In moving the motion the Premier said the Statement would have been delivered some time ago wore it not for the delay that had taken placo in debating the other Government business, but he thought it was necessary that it should be put in tha possession of members without further loss of time. Sir John Hall snggested that as nobody would hear the Statement when it was delivered that it should be taken as read. Mr Kerr wanted to know what good it would do them when they had got it and Mr Guiness thought the Statement might very well bo laid on the table of the Houso tonight when members could see it just as well as after its dolivery by the Minister. DEFEAT OF THE 'FRISCO SERYICE. There was considerable cxcitement m the House when Mr Ward's amendment, abolishing the Frisco service, was carried by the large majority of IS votes, and the opponents of the service set up loud cheers for their victory. Immediately afterwards the House divided on Mr Samuel's amendment, that no subsidies nhould be given to thedirect service,which was lost fey 48 to 25.
