POLITICAL NOTES.
(BY TELEGRAPH—OWN COW!esposDENT). Wklungton, Wednesday. INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL COMMIT TALS. A return was laid on the table by the Minister of Education from which it appears that the total number of committals of children to Industrial Schools on magistrates orders from Ist January, 18S3, to 31st March, 1888, was as follows In 18S3, 320 ; ISS4, 315 ; 1885, 340 ; 18S0, 238 ; 1887, 2*22 ; 1888, 07. The following classification is made of those children committed from .January 1883 to March 1888 and who are maintained by Government or Charitable Aid Boards : Otago, 148 ; Wellington and Wairarapa, 91; North Canterbury, 80; South Canterbury, 34 ; Grey County, 32 ; Hawkes Bay, 22 ; Auckland, 02 ; Patea and Wanganui, 17 ; Nelson, 17 ; Innngahua, 12 ; Wuikato, 11 ;Taranaki, 11 ; Waitaki, 17 ; Thames, 4 ; Southland. 4, CROWN TEN ANTS. The Premier has been interviewed by several members as to his intentions with regard to the Crown Land tenants now that the Fair Rents Bill lias beon thrown out by the council. Sir Harry Atkinson stated that no pressure would be placed upon those in arrears. LABOUR SETTLEMENTS. The proposal of the Government to put £10,000 on the Supplementary Estimates for the promotion of labour settlements in the South Island will be strongly opposed by the Auckland members especially, as a similar application for the North Island was strongly refused by Ministers. MR LARACIi'S ACTION. The member for the Peninsula has fully 1 determined to take proceedings for libel 1 against the New Zealand Herald in connection with the statements made by that paper referring to his honorarium, and he claims £2000 damages. Mr Larnach , asserts that he will accept no apology. He has left the matter in the hands of his solicitors, Sir Robert Stout and Mr P. Buckley, two of his colleagues in the late Ministry. One of the proprietors of the paper (Mr Horton) is at present absent from the colony. MINING EXHIBITS. The Goldfields Committee will probably ' report to-morrow on the quesi tion of Mining Representation at . the Melbourne Exhibition. The Com- [ mittee will also take into consideration 1 the reuresentation of the mineral products ; ot the colony at the Paris Exhibition, and i the French Consul at Wellington has been asked to attend to give evidence in that matter.
