The Times accepted Mr ParneH's challenge, and published the Irish Bills alleged as not approved by the Gladstone Government. Russia is said to bo advancing West in spite of Austria. Mrs Gordon Bail lie has been bailed out. Rioting was renewed in Paris during the funeral of a leading Communist, the police having to charge the mob and use their pistols. . The Nord Deutsche Zeitung says France attaches little value to preserving the peace of Europe. The Press of Russia and Germany assert that England is no longer a leading Power. Turkey is annoyed at the annexation of Zulla by Italy. Seven vessels were wrecked and twenty-four lives lost in a severe storm at Valparaiso. A railway collision occurred at Seddington, England, and six persons were killed. The U. S. Senate has adopted the Chinese Prohibition Bill. Jackson, the murderer of the Manchester warder, has been hanged. The. Hon. Henry Win. Cross, son of Viscount Cross, is a Tory candidate for Liverpool. In the House of Commons today, Mr Par noil's amendment to the Commission Bill was withdrawn on the Government assuring the House that witnesses would be compelled to disclose all the information they possessed. A motion by Mr Labouchere to exclude the Times from the provisions of the indemnity clauses if the charges were proved to be libels, was defeated. The Commission were authorised to make progress reports. August 9. Thirteen thousand quarters of wheat now shipping at Melbourne have been sold at thirty-five shillings and ninepenee. Tiu is now quoted at £92 ss.
