Bishop Barry, of Sydney, succeeds to the See of Chester. A conference on the Bulgarian question is proposed at Berlin. Severe floods have occurred in Russia, Austria and Germany. The French Government refuse to compensate the Rev, Mr Jones for his expulsion from the £Je\v Hebrides. Sir James Ferguson says no protest has been received from Victoria against pauper emigration. Mr Parnell challenges Mr Chamberlain to produce the Irish Bills alleged to have been drafted by him substituting Councils for Parliaments. A motion to negotiate with England for the political union of Canada and the United States has been introduced in the American Senate. A fishing lugger foundered off Scarborough, Yorkshire, and nine persons were drowned.
