RAGLAN
Road Board.— At the last meeting of the Raglan Road Board, held on August 4th, tenders having been received for deepening a drain in Wallis-street, that of Mr Loane was accepted. The deepening of this drain will, it is hoped, carry off a large quantity of water which accumulates in this portion of the township, and prevent the proper cultivation of a considerable portion of land. Tenders were also received for filling up holes in the roadway in Cliff and Bow-streets at the junction of the two streets at the post-office corner. The continued delay in calling for fresh elections for the county was also considered, and it was decided to communicate with Major Jackson, requesting him to see to the matter, and request the Government to at once call for an election, as great dissatisfaction is being expressed at the delay.
• Steam Communication. — Our local trader the s.s. Rowence arrived here on Thursday evening last from Onehunga, via. Kawhia. The manager of the Northern Steam Ship Company, Mr Ranson, arrived with her. A telegram had been received, requesting the settlers to meet him, but owing to the short notice not many came down for that purpose. Those who met him, after mentioning the wants of the past, re freights, etc., received the promise of attention to their requirements. The Company is determined on their part to do all they can to increase the trade by a regular use of their boat, carrying goods as cheap as they can afford. Mr W.Thompson who had a number of fat sheep going by the steamer for the Auckland market, also interviewed him, and a considerable reduction upon the previous freight was conceded. Posts have been placed in the channel coming to the wharf by the agent, Mr Sutton, under direction of the Town Board, thus enabling the vessel to reach the wharf much easier. The steamer left for Onehunga on Saturday morning, having a cargo of sheep, pigs, flax, etc. Social Party.— A social party was held in the schoolroom, Waitetuna on Monday evening last, given and attended by the young folks of that locality, which was considered by those present to be a great success,
Weather.—The weather still continues unsettled, large quantities of rain having fallen at intervals during the last few weeks and at times being very cold, Karioi having snow upon it upon two occasions. The Maori young men are actively engaged in building new whares near their cultivations, ploughing is being well got on with, and they seem determined to have a good breadth of land in cultivation the coming season.
