CHESS CLUB.
A meeting of gentleman interested in tht formation of a Chess Club was held in Thk Waikato Times Buildings on Thursday evening. The following were present:— Messrs Stevens, Quick, Redmond, G. Edgecumbe, Cowper, J. Parr, Home, and C. Knox. Mr Edgecumbe was voted to the chair, and introduced the business for discussion. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Cowper, Mr Quick was elected Secretary and Treasurer. Mr Quick proposed, and Mr Edgecumbe seconded that Mr W. A. Graham be President of the Club. Carried. A letter was read from the Auckland Chess Club, stating that, although it had been in existence five years, they possessed no written rules. They intended shortly to frame a set of by-laws. and would be glad to supply a copy, and hoped to arrange for a match. Mr Cowper proposed, and Mr Home seconded, that a committee consisting of Messrs Quick, Edgecumbe, Home, and the mover, be appointed to draught rules and fix the amount of subscription. Carried. It was resolved to meet for practice every Thursday evening in the long room of The Waikato Times Buildings, which was placed at the Club e disposal by the proprietor, the Club to pay its own lighting and firing. Messrs Redmond and Stevens inaugurated the Club by a contest, which lasted about two hours and resulted in a draw in favour of the latter. ~- \
