COMMUNICATION RESTORED
A THIRD CABLE TO BE LAID,
Thb following telegram was received by the telegraphist at Hamilton yesterday afternoon from the cable olliee at Wakapuiika:—"Special steamer has arrived at Darwin from Java with telegrams. Work now coining through. Restoration of Banjoewangi cables expected hourly, repairing steamer now at work. The Press Association have received the following telegram from Mr Browning, Superintendent of the Cable Company at Wakapuaka :—" I have received tin- following from the chairman of the Eastern .Intension Company :-"Lon-i>on, (itli Jiily,lii consequence of the unfortunate interruption through the sudden and simultaneous breakdown of both the JavaAustralian cables, which we attribute to volcanic action, and to prevent its recurrence as far as possible, the company have decided to immediately lay a cable between Banjoewangi mid Western Australia. Tliis will give colonists a third line of communication with Java, and an alternate land line through Australia, liie repairing steamer, Recorder, is now over the site of the break and the restoration of communication is expected in a few days.
[By Electric Tei.kcuaph.-Coi'viugiit.l Pout Dauwin, July 13. The cable-repairing steamer Recorder has buoyed both ends of the old cable at a distance of eight miles from each end. It is now thought that communication will bo restored in the course of a few hours, though work lias been retarded, owing to bad weather. The steamer Meyer has arrived with a batch of English cables, which are now being forwarded. WkM-inuton, l'riday.
The following information has been received :—The ropaii-inf? steamer Recorder left Singapore for the cable ground on Sunday, July Ist, and commenced grappling for the broken cable on 1< nday evenin", but was delayed by had weather, She recovered the Banioewangi end of one cable on Tuesday, and buoyed it. The Port Darwin end of the' same cable was recovered last night, and the ship is now paying out cable to fill the gap between the broken ends. The distance of the break from Banjocwangi is 225 miles, mid the depth of water 1300 fathoms. The steimer GovernorGeneral Meyer arrived at Port Darwin _today froni Banjoowangi, bringing osJ messages. She was specially chartered by the company as soon as possible after the interruption.
