ALEXANDRA.
Entertainment. —The entertainment in aid of the school library in the Public Hall on Friday evening last was fairly attended, and the performance itself a most excellent one. Our local talent has received additional strength from the Misses Wills, and several well-known amateurs from a distance kindly assisted. The musical selections hy Mrs Helps and Mr T. Goodfellow, on the piano and violin respectively, were excellent performances. Mrs Grierson, one of our old favourites, also sang on this occasion, and her voice has lost none of its sweetness. Miss Allan was also in capital voice, and her " Auld Robin Gray," with the tableaus, was an immense success , . The comic song in character, "The New Zealand Twins," was a first rate make-up and caused roars of langhter. Encores wore not allowed, ov Messrs Chappell and Collier would have had to repeat. Mr Clarke's fine tenor voice was heard to advantage, and the tableau and song, "Britannia," which concluded the programme, in which Misses Wills, Allan, and Finch, and Messrs Aubin, Ahier, T. Gresham and Rij.'g took part, was the most effective spectacle ever attempted here, surprising all, and eliciting cheers and rounds of applause over and over aaain. Mr John Aubin efficiently occupied tile chair as conductor. The usual pleasant dance followed, and was kept up merrily till the morning. The following was the programme : — Overture, Mrs Helps and Mr Goodfellow ; " German Student's Song," school children ; pianoforte duet, Misses !•. Aubin and E. Roberts; song, Mr Clarke ; tableau and song, " Fisher Boy's Home"; song, Miss Roaa Wills; round, school children ; Recitation, Mr Gresham ; song, Mrs Grierson ; tableau and song, "Susan's story. ' Interval. Overture, Mrs Helps and Mr Goodfellcw ; tableau and song, " Auld Robin Gray " ; comic song, " The New Zealand Twins"; Song, Miss Kate Wills, and Messrs Collier and Chappell; song, Mr Clarke ; tableau and song, " The Whistling Thief"; song, "The New Zealand Volunteers," school children ; vocal duet, the Misses Wills ; pianoforte and violin, Mrs Helps and Mr Goodfellow ; tableau and song, " Britannia."
Things Gknehally.—News in the district is scarce, but there are signs of improvement, and our farmers are not so depressiijgly gloomy as a month or two ago. Your articlts on retrenchment are frequently canvassed, and the views therein expressed most cordially endorsed.
Nativk SKTTr.KMKNT.—There are Imt few natives at Wliatiwlmtihou at present, but Tawhiao intends to have a larsic quantity of wheat planted there this season. The death of Potatau, a nephew of nananru, and a relative of Tawhiao's, al Otorohanga, last week, lias taken them away to attend the tangi over the remains. The judgment on the Knpua Block, will, I am informed, be delivered by Judge Mair, on Wednesday next.
