Dr .Pollen gave notice for Tuesday to move "That, in the opinion of the Council, it is not desirable, in view of the present financial condition of the colony, that any portion of the public revenue derivable from Customs duties should be appropriated as subsidies to local bodies. Hon. Mr Hart moved, "it is the duty of the State to substantially tax the profits derived from the use of the totalisator." The Attorney-General pointed out that the uuvlter should be well considered before arriving at a decision as it would be a very bad precedent for the Legislature to raise revenue from gambling. After the debate, the motion was lost on a division by Hi to 17. An amendment by Hon. Mr Miller that a select committee to encpure into winking of totalisatois be appointed, was carried on a division by 12 to 10. The Council rose at o o'clock.
