HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

Installation of Mayor.

A SPECIAL mooting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. There were present : His Worship the Mayor, Mr Knox, and Crs. Sandes, Salmon, Wood, Missen, Bell, von Stunner and Jones. Mr Isaac Coates the Mayor-elect was also present. The Town Clerk having read tho result of the election declaring Mr Isaac Coates duly elected to the office of Mayor, Mr Coates introduced by Crs. Sandes and Jones lnaue the usual declaration, and took his seat. His Worship briefly thanked the burgesses for the honour they had done him in electing him to flti tho Mayoral chair, and he hoped that when his term of office had expired he would not be found wanting. Or. Knox then presented the following petition to His Worship:—"To His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton, —We. the undersigned burgesses and settlors, respectfully request you to call a public meeting at an early date, for the pnrposa of urging upon the serious attention of both Houses of tho Assembly now in session, tlie imperative necessity for effecting further considerable retrenchment in the public expenditure and to such an extent as will obviate the necessity for any increase of taxation.—Lewis O'Neill, W. Steele, H. Steele, IT. Cowper, John Parr George I'j lgecumbe, C. Tippen, J. 11. 10. Hatrick, R. Fitzmiuriee Sandes, K. T. IXtvey, P. Ij6 (Jiiosiip, W. Dey, James lleid, Frodk. ,1. von Stunner, John Knox, James Missen, 1). Salmon, W, Tavh>r, Stephen Tucker, W. J. (iribble, W. Bell. In receiving the petition I lis Worship said that he had much pleasure in acceding to the prayer of the. petitioners, and would call a pub'ie meeting for 3.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. This being all the business the Council rose.
