Sydney, 'June 12. The Chinese Conference was opened today, but the Press was not admitted. Sir Henry Parltes was chosen president. Mr Playford, Premier of South Australia, gave notice of a series of resolutions which he thought would comprehend all the business. It is expected _ that the Conference will conclude its sittings by Thursday. The suggestions cabled by Lord Knutsford were read at the Conference. They are generally disapproved, as hot beint; worthy of consideration. It has been suggested by the South Australian delegates, that a poll-tax of £30 be imposed, and that the tonnage allowance should be increased to .one Chinese for every two huudred tons.' The.. Chinese passengers detained on board the Changsha made a desperate attempt to obtain a landing this afternoon. After a short struggle, however, the police succeeded in quelling the disturbance. June 13. Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, favours limiting the influx of Chinese, but thinks the diplomatic influence of England would effect more than any drastic measures proposed bythe Conference. London, June 12. The Times says the recent enactment of the Legislature of New South Wales is absolutely incompatible with the treaties of Nankin and Pekin.
