HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

Thb usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Hamilton, at 7.30. p.m. on Tuesday. The following councillors were present, viz., Crs. Knox, Sandes, Salmon, Wood, Missen, Bell, Coates, Jones and von Sturmer. Mr T. G. Sandes Borough Engineer was aHo in attendance. In the absence of His Worship the Mayor Cr. Knox was voted to the chair.

Pl'bmc Bcimhngs.—A letter was read from Mr C. Y. O'Connor, Public Wcrks Department, in reply to a request from the Council, to be furnished with a copy of the plans, &t\, of the public buildings lately erected at Tauranga, stating that the grant from the Government for departmental buildings had lapsed, and unless tho borough was prepared to bear the whole cost of the buildings it would be n»> use going further into the matter. The letter was received.

Skbijon's Dbain.—Mr S. T. Soddon wrote asking that work done by him ia clearing out this drain might be allowed to go as against the amount due by him as mortgagee for rates on the shop occupied by thn late Mr W. Black. Cr. Jones moved that Mr Seddon be made to pay the rates for which he was billed. —Seconded by Cr. Wood and carried.

Strket.— Mr H. Hunter wrote, drawing the attention of the council to the impassable state of the road past his place towards the lagoon at No. 1, and requesting that something be done to put it order before the winter sets in.—Cr. Sandes moved that the Foreman of Works report on the matter at next meeting.—Seconded by Cr. Salmon and carried. Poonijjckepkk's Report.—The Poundkeeper reported that during the past month 19 dog» had been registered, making a total of 13!) since January 10th, and two head of cattle impounded; also, that he had received the following monies : Pound fees, £1 lis; Park Reserve, £2 Is; Bradley's paddock, £1 Is 6d ; West Commonage, 3s (5d ; East commonage, Is ; dog fees, £4 15s. —The Chairman drew the attention of the ranger to the number of horses and cattle that roam the streets at night, and also to the pack of greyhounds all seemingly unregistered, which run about Victoria-street worrying all strange dogs. Salk Trains.—Mr Hudson promised to do his best to accommodate the public in the matter of trains to and from Hamilton on sale days, whether sales bo held oil either Wednesdays or Thursdays. Resignation of His Worship the Mavoh.—The following letter from the Mayor, which was delivered to the clerk, was at once road:—Hamilton, June 12th, 1888. Dear Sir,—As my occupation in Hamilton is gone, and I shall possibly be leaving the town shortly, I beg to tender you my resignation of the office of Mayor. With best wishes for thn pr isperity of tho Borough.—Believe me, yours sincerely,—C. J. W. Barton.—J. M. Gelling. Esq., Town Clerk.—Cr. Jones moved that Cr. Knox be Mayor until tho regular extraordinary election to fill the vacancy, be held, seconded by Cr. Coates, and carried unanimously. The acting Mayor, after thanking the Council for the honour conferred upon and the confidence placed in nim, moved that a vote of thanks be forwarded to the late Mayor, for his past services in the Borough. Seconded by Cr. Jones and carried unanimously. Lkask.—Re Endowment 407. The committee recommend that the endowment bo put up for lease by auction, for 14 years, at an upset price of £1 per annum, the section to be fenced in, and if the Council require the ground before the expiration of the 14 years, the lease may be annulled, the Borough to pay compensation for the boundary fencing only, and that Crs. Jonas, von Sturmer, and Sandes be appointed a committee to draw up the terms of the lease. Tho recommendation of the committee were adopted. i. Annual Rate.—His Worship moved that notice be published that it is the intention of the council on the _10th of July next.to strike a rate of Is in the £, on the annual value of property in the borough.—Seconded by Cr. Jones. —Cr. Coates moved a3 an amendment that the rate be 9d in the £. —Seconded by Cr. Wood.—The amendment being put first, the voting was. For: Crs. Coates, Bell, Wood. Against: The Mayor, Crs. Jones, Sandes, Salmon, Missen and Yon Sturmer; it was therefore declared lost. On the original motion being put it was carried by a majority of six, Tho voting being viceversa.

BATHS.—The Clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to recover the rent for the baths. Valuer.— A notice of motion by the late mayor on the grant to valuer lapsed. —Cr. von Sturmer gave notice to move at next meeting that the balance of the cost of the valuation of the borough be paid to Mr Gaudin. . Notice of Motion*. —The notice of motions iri the names of Crs. Knox and Goates were withdrawn by the consent of the council. Runt.—ln accordance with notice given, Cr. Salmon moved that the sum of £4 7s 9d be charged to the Waikato District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the rent of office up to date. —Seconded by Or. •Tones, and carried. Thk £4000.— Cr. Jones gave notice to move at next meeting that a poll of the burgesses be taken to obtain sanction to transfer £1000 from the £4000 deposit iri the Bank of New Zealand to the Council's general account, for the purpose of paying off the present overdraft, and the balance if any to be used for general purposes, and that the remaining £3000 be returned to the Government, and debantures taken up at the expiration of the term for which it was deposited. Hukfaceuan.—The Clerk reported that the term of C. McKenzie's engagement had expired, but it was decided to employ him for the present month to allow the Works Committee to report on the necessity of employing a surfaceman. This being all the business, the council adjourned to Monday next.
