WRECK OF THE S.S. HAWEA.
Thk Union steamship Hawea, which arrived off the New Plymouth breakwator from Manakau on Monday night, was wrecked at half-past seven tho followin? morning, and is now under water. Whilst steaming to take up her berth at the wharf the vessel struck heavily against some *fiahi : substance, "and filled rapidly. All the passengers-and crew were safely landed. Captain Hansby and Chief Officer Walter being the last to lpave the ship. The racehorse Allegro, belonging to Mr Keith, was drowned whilst in the attempt to swim her ashore. It is supposed that the Hawea struck a hidden rock, Hot before known to exist. The insurances amount to nearly £0000. and the company are their own underwriters to the extent of £8000. The Hawea was a smart little steamer of 721 tons, and IGO horse power.
(BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION). New Plymouth, Wednesday. The Hawea shows no signs of having moved. Opinions are that she can easily be floated, as Rhe is in no way strained. The nautical enquiry is now going on.
