WEBB'S ROOT SHOW AT CAMBRIDGE.
On Saturday last, Mr G. J. Neal, the indefatigable agent of Messrs Webb, the wellknown seedsman, of Wordsley, England, gave a number of prizes for roots of various descriptions, that had been grown from their seed, which had been supplied through lii.s agency. The show was a very good one, and indued, so far .surpassed Mr Neal's expectations, that he has decided to make it an annual affair, with very probably, an extended prize list. Tho roots were exhibited on a plot of ground adjoiuing Mr Neal's premises in Duke-street, and in the evonin&r were removed into his store, where they will be on viewduiingthe present week. The judges were : Messrs Cr. E. Clark, R. Reynolds and R. Fisher—all of whom wore well qualified to perform the onerous duty, and their awards gave the utmost satisfaction, as they paid due regard to quality as well as weight. All the exhibits being so good, it would bo invidious on our part to give the names of more than the prize winners, of which the subjoined i.s a list:—Webb's Imperial swede, Ist, "m, Mr S. Cowling; 2nd, 2s (id, Mr Vospor; highly commended, Mr E. i>. Wnlkor. Purple top mammoth, Ist, ss, Mr Vt. Albens, two weighing 'Mbs. Green Globe White, Ist, Mr J, Bridgeman, two weighing 3Ubs. No second prizes wore advertised to be K' v( ".'i but in consequence of some of the exhibits being of such raro merit, Mr Neal felt compelled to make the growers some slight recognition, and gave second prizes in thrco of the classes. An extra prize was also awarded Mr Selby for several roots of sugar-beet. Mr Kobert Watson, of Pukeriuiu, showed several purple top mammoth and green globe white swedes that were sown on March 7th, for whioh he was highly commended. Captain Owen, of Cambridge West, showed a white Belgian carrot that weighed I4 ; ,'lbs, but it was a monstrosity, having n large number of roots. He informs us that he has taken a number of similar ones from the paddock in which the one. was grown that were quite as heavy, aud, he added, were quite as ugly. Mr Neal is to be congratulated upon having brought the show to so suscessful an issue, and it will doubtless stimulate the farmers to make the next one an even greater success,
