Hamilton has admitted that the English Navy is unable to guarantee absolute protection to the whole of England's commerce, and said that the country would never tolerate the demands made by Admiral Hornby for an increase in. the iloct. The press are dissatisfied at the statement of the iirst Lord of the Admiralty, The House of Commons has, by a majority of 121, carried a vote for the protection of ports and coaling stations. June 6. A public meeting was held to-day to consider the defences of the city, and it was decided to petition the Government to place the security of the country beyond a doubt. Admiral Alcester endorsed the views of Admiral Hornby.
